HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS “HPV”

HPV

Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

HPV infection is a viral infection that commonly causes skin or mucous membrane growths (warts). There are more than 100 varieties of human papillomavirus.

Some types of HPV infection cause warts, and some can cause different types of cancer.

Most infections don’t lead to cancer. But some types of genital HPV can cause cancer of the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina (cervix). Other types of cancers, including cancers of the anus, penis, vagina, vulva and back of the throat (oropharyngeal), have been linked to it.

These infections are often transmitted sexually or through other skin-to-skin contact. Vaccines can help protect against the strains most likely to cause genital warts or cervical cancer.

Does HPV cause cancer?

It can cause cervical and other cancers including cancer of the vulva, vagina, penis, or anus. It can also cause cancer in the back of the throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils (called oropharyngeal cancer).

Cancer often takes years, even decades, to develop after a person gets HPV. The types that can cause genital warts are not the same as the types that can cause cancers.

There is no way to know which people who have, will develop cancer or other health problems. People with weak immune systems (including those with HIV/AIDS) may be less able to fight off HPV. They may also be more likely to develop health problems.

Signs and symptoms:

The Human papilloma virus (HPV) is presented as:

  • Lesions of the mucous membranes and skin diseases.
  • Cervical lesions (codilomi).
  • Discomfort intimate.
  • Although this virus usually heals itself, there are cases in which, if neglected for many years, may develop into tumors.
  • In men no symptoms.

How can I avoid HPV and the health problems it can cause?

Get vaccinated. Here at Marina Medical Center we offer vaccine .The vaccine is safe and effective. It can protect against diseases (including cancers) caused when given in the recommended age groups. Get screened for cervical cancer. Routine screening for women aged 21 to 65 years old can prevent cervical cancer.

If you are sexually active :

Use latex condoms the right way every time you have sex. This can lower your chances of getting HPV. But it can infect areas not covered by a condom – so condoms may not fully protect against getting HPV;

Be in a mutually monogamous relationship – or have sex only with someone who only has sex with you.

Get tested now.
